Ugandan workers with sustainable charcoal

The Black Pillar

Sustainable Charcoal & Biochar — Renewable, Traceable, High-Performance

The Black Pillar converts plantation biomass into two high-value products: sustainable charcoal for Uganda’s domestic fuel market, and premium biochar for soil improvement and permanent carbon removal. Both are produced using advanced kiln technology that delivers two to three times the yield of traditional methods with a fraction of the emissions.

Our Production Systems

Retort Kilns

Closed-system kilns that capture and recycle combustion gases, slashing emissions while achieving 25–30% charcoal yields per tonne of biomass — double the efficiency of traditional earth kilns.

Mobile Metallic Kilns

Transportable units deployed directly to plantation sites, eliminating long-distance biomass haulage and enabling decentralised production close to the source material.

Pyrolysis Technology

Temperature-controlled pyrolysis produces consistent, high-quality biochar with predictable H/Corg ratios, surface area, and porosity — meeting the EBC certification requirements for international carbon markets.

The Carbonisation Process

01

Biomass Sourcing

Plantation-grown wood harvested on a sustainable rotation cycle

02

Drying

Solar and waste-heat drying reduces moisture content, improving kiln efficiency

03

Pyrolysis

Controlled heating at 400–700°C drives off volatiles and locks carbon

04

Certified Biochar
