Ugandan workers with sustainable charcoal

Research & Innovation

Building the Knowledge Base for African Biochar Science

GBG conducts applied research into biochar agronomy, kiln efficiency, carbon verification, and supply chain systems. Our work is tailored to East African soil types, climate conditions, and smallholder farming contexts. We actively collaborate with academic and development research institutions.

Research Focus Areas

Biochar Agronomy

Field trials across Uganda measuring biochar application rates, soil response, and crop yield improvements under different soil types, rainfall regimes, and farming systems.

Kiln Efficiency

Optimising retort kiln configurations, batch timing, gas recirculation, and pre-treatment protocols to maximise both charcoal and biochar yields per unit of biomass input.

Carbon Verification

Developing and refining measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) methodologies to accurately quantify carbon removal and meet the requirements of international certification bodies.

Research Collaboration

We welcome research partnerships with universities, institutes, and development organisations working on biochar, carbon removal, and smallholder agriculture in Africa. Contact us to explore collaboration opportunities.
